4 Star Excellence awarded to The Old Inn

Tuesday 12th May 2009, proved to be a very memorable day at The Old Inn, with representation for the NITB and recognised industry officials gathering to celebrate the official launch of The Old Inn as the new 4 star hotel in North Down.

A good news story in current trading times is always welcome, especially when it relates to a small independent family business. Such is the feeling of euphoria this week as The Old Inn, in Crawfordsburn County Down, prepares to receive its fourth star from Northern Ireland Tourist Board Chairman, Howard Hastings.

“At The Old Inn we constantly strive to improve what we do, aiming to achieve excellence in hospitality and customer care, benchmarking best practice, as well as delivering marketing initiatives and commitment to staff training and development. Above all else, we constantly re-invest in the infrastructure of this lovely old thatched coaching inn, soon to be 400 years old,” said Sales Director Paul Rice.

‘Our family has owned the Inn for two generations and some of our team have been with us for more than 30 years. As employers, we play a vital role within this small village community, with many of our staff coming from the immediate vicinity of North Down. Yet, on a wider level, we are a key member of the Northern Ireland tourism industry, helping to deliver a unique and traditional hospitality product for both leisure and business visitors alike.”

The NI Tourist Board applies strict criteria to their grading scheme which primarily considers accommodation and food service. In order to meet this four star grade, the Rice family invested a total of £1.8million over the last three years, resulting in the extensive refurbishment of bedrooms, bathrooms, bars, meeting rooms and public areas. In the process, the hotel also increased its staff to 110, creating an additional 15 full and part-time jobs.

“In terms of performance, we are beating industry trends by growing our business by 20% year on year since 2006. A further investment of £1.7million is planned over the next 12 months with the development of a new restaurant and state-of-the-art kitchen. Our ultimate goal is to enhance our image and consolidate our brand position. Four star status allows us to better compete in the international and local tourism marketplace, while positioning us as one of the top, and most historic hotels in Northern Ireland,” added Paul Rice.
